There are times when we know exactly what needs to happen, but we keep putting it off. We’ve prayed about it, thought about it, maybe even talked about it, but eventually good intentions have to become obedience.
That’s where Nehemiah finds himself in chapter 2. For months, he had prayed over Jerusalem. He carried the burden, waited on God, and refused to force the opportunity. But while he waited, he also prepared. By the time the king asked what he wanted, Nehemiah already knew where he needed to go, what he needed, and what the work would require. Waiting on God had not been wasted time. God was preparing him for the moment when the door would open.
When that opportunity finally came, Nehemiah admitted that he was afraid. God opening a door did not make the next step easy. It still required courage. Nehemiah prayed, spoke honestly, and moved forward. Later, when he arrived in Jerusalem, he didn’t rush into action blindly. He looked carefully at the damage, understood what needed to be done, and then invited others to join him in the work.
That is an important pattern for us. Faith is not rushing ahead without wisdom, but neither is it endlessly waiting because we are afraid to act. Sometimes the most faithful thing we can do is pray, prepare, look honestly at the situation, and then take the next step God has placed in front of us.
Maybe there is a conversation you have been avoiding, a habit you know needs to change, someone you need to encourage, or a place where God has been calling you to serve. You may not know how everything will turn out, and you may not have the entire plan. Nehemiah didn’t either.
The question is not, “Can I finish everything today?”
The question is, “What is the next faithful step?”
Our obedience does not earn God’s favor. It flows from the grace we have already received through Jesus. So pray. Prepare. Trust Him. And when the time comes, take the step.
