not a fan. – Week 4 – “The Comfortable Cross”
Jesus said, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” — Luke 9:23
When Jesus first spoke those words, the disciples would not have pictured a beautiful necklace, a church steeple, or a polished decoration. They would have pictured Rome. They would have pictured brutality, shame, and death.
The cross was not comfortable.
When a man carried a cross, everyone knew two things: he had been found guilty, and he was not coming back. That is the weight behind Jesus’ invitation to follow Him.
To take up our cross is to admit, “I am guilty. I have sinned before a holy God, and I need mercy.” But it is also to declare, “I am not going back. I am turning from the old life and following Jesus.”
The danger is that we can make the cross comfortable. We can wear it, sing about it, decorate with it, and still refuse to carry it. We can do church on Sunday and let our flesh have the final say the rest of the week.
But Jesus does not invite us to comfortable Christianity. He invites us to surrender.
The cross puts the old life to death, but it also opens the door to resurrection life. What looked like weakness became the power of salvation. What looked like defeat became victory. What looked like shame became grace.
And what God did for the cross, He can do in us.
So today, bring Him your pride, your sin, your weakness, your need for control, and your desire for comfort. Let the cross speak over all of it.
Sin does not get the final word.
Shame does not get the final word.
Fear does not get the final word.
The flesh does not get the final word.
The cross has the final word.
