Identity Crisis – Part 3: “I Am Not My Flesh”
Have you ever caught yourself thinking, “Why did I do that?”
You knew the right thing to do. You wanted to obey God. Yet somehow you found yourself giving in to anger, pride, fear, temptation, or the desire to have your own way.
The Bible explains why:
“For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh…” (Galatians 5:17)
God created us as a triune being—spirit, soul, and body. Our body connects us to the world through our senses, while our spirit is the part of us that knows and communes with God. In between is the soul—our mind, will, and emotions. Whichever voice we allow to shape our soul will ultimately shape our beliefs and behaviors. The world continually appeals to the flesh, while God speaks to us by His Spirit. Every day we choose which voice we will believe.
Too many Christians define themselves by their failures, temptations, or struggles. God doesn’t.
If you belong to Christ, the flesh may still tempt you, but it no longer defines you or controls you. The real you has been made alive in Christ. The Holy Spirit now lives within you, giving you the power to choose truth over lies, faith over fear, and obedience over selfishness.
The world says you’ll find fulfillment through success, possessions, comfort, or approval. Jesus says, “I am enough.”
Today, stop listening to the voice that says your struggle is your identity. Listen instead to what God says about you.
The flesh is in me, but it is not me.
I am in Christ.
I am not God.
I am not my flesh.
By the power of the Holy Spirit, I can choose to walk in the freedom Jesus has given me.
